This is what happens when you combine the prison system with art.
Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has created the exhibit “Blossom” as part of a larger art collection on Alcatraz. The exhibit is exactly what the name suggests, with ceramic flowers blossoming out of the toilets, sinks, and bathtubs at one of America’s most notorious prisons.
The curator of the exhibit offers two explanations for Weiwei’s work.
It’s a symbolic way to comfort those who have been imprisoned.
And it could also be a nod to China’s famous Hundred Flowers Campaign.
The detail of the ceramic flowers is truly stunning.
The exhibit takes place in the hospital ward cells and medical offices of the former prison.
It’s on display until April of 2015.
